Build a Full IDE for Lasso9 - 10 weeks but requires more definition of scope

14 Mar 2011

Bringing out a full IDE is proposed to encourage new adoption of Lasso 9 and increase its attraction to developers from other languages. If you are interested in, or voting on this development, please comment on exactly what features are critical to include, and what would make it a 'must have'.

An IDE would provide a way to step through Lasso code, set breakpoints or examine variable values like Firebug and other languages' IDEs.

Diversity

by Jonathan Guthrie, 12 August 2011

I use 3 different tools: Eclipse, Coda and Dreamweaver. I use each for different reasons, and often on the same project concurrently, even the same file at the same time. I don't believe any tool is the perfect answer. Personally I would prefer to have syntax modules for each of the popular packages be available, and a robust standalone debugger process. That would allow developers to have personal choice and yet access to the deep tools that we need.
I do however believe that Lasso Studio for Dreamweaver is a huge opportunity to lower the barrier to entry.

Waste of resources.

by Ke Carlton, 12 August 2011

Implementing a full IDE for Lasso is a waste of Lassosoft resources. I agree with Kyle, that a step by step debugger would be a great addition. In terms of IDEs, providing syntax and autocomplete support is available for the major platforms (coda, aptana / eclipse, textmate & BBedit) then anything there after is a bonus.

If I could use a votes to mod something down then I would do so here...

Just a debugger

by Kyle Jessup, 09 June 2011

I vote for not a full IDE, as there are already many tools which do this nicely that Lasso could tie into, but just a nice debugger. Just a debugger alone would save huge amounts of everyone's time.

Solid IDE functionality

by Tim Taplin, 01 April 2011

Having a solid IDE available is a key adoptability measure. I would hope that this effort would build a core engine that could be used to create versions for Eclipse, Dreamweaver, and other widely used development platforms. I often see developers considering a move to other platforms champion the existence of step thru debuggers as a key element to that move.
The availability of a full standalone Lasso only IDE as a commercial product is not what I see as a high priority.
