I am looking for a good resource to persuade a client to stop using Mac OS X, and start using Acrobat for their PDF creation. I found this on the Adobe Web site:
"PDF files created by the Quartz imaging model in Mac OS X do not use Adobe PDF creation technology. PDF files created by using the Preview button or the Save As PDF button in the Mac OS X print interface will be created by the Apple operating system. Apple PDF creation does not provide any options for optimization of the PDF documents and Apple PDF does not provide any PostScript to PDF conversion method. As a result, PDF files created from Mac OS X will be larger than Adobe PDF files, and may have challenges in searchability, accessibility, and professional print production workflows."
But I need more detail. I know Dov Isaacs has spoken of these issues previously, but can find none of his emails. Anyone help? Thanks John

I'd say that it depends on your client's needs. Does he/she need "searchability, accessibility, and professional print production workflows," or is the actual usage of these PDFs low-end?
We use CS3 to create PDFs for client projects, of course, and for other professional purposes. However, when I print a Web-based account statement or receipt to PDF for basic, internal use, I use Apple's PDF creation. It's convenient and it meets the need.

Dear John,
Perhaps these overviews are of any help. Could not find the resource anymore, but I use these overviews in Acrobat trainings. It gives a good view on what is (not) supported.

John, concerning more arguments you might find some at different tools than Acrobat, too f.i.:

What is the purpose of the PDF? It may help to make the case that they should not be used for - - - - because - - - -.

Yuri - you do realize that those JPEGs you posted are produced from material on the Adobe website, right?? Could you please remove them and simply link folks over to the originals at <http://blogs.adobe.com/loridefurio/2007/09/supported_pdf_f_1.html >.

While I would never stop someone from purchasing a copy of Adobe Acrobat...There is nothing wrong with the Apple method of PDF creation.
Where did you find this piece of text on our web site?? Let's look at it.
> "PDF files created by the Quartz imaging model in Mac OS X do not > use Adobe PDF creation technology. PDF files created by using the > Preview button or the Save As PDF button in the Mac OS X print > interface will be created by the Apple operating system.
This is 100% accurate - but that doesn't necessary make it bad. There are THOUSANDS of PDF production tools on the market that aren't from Adobe - some are good, some are bad (and some are REALLY BAD). Apple's is good.
> Apple PDF creation does not provide any options for optimization of > the PDF documents
That's not true at all. Apple has provided optimization choices (as a post process) since 10.3.
> and Apple PDF does not provide any PostScript to PDF conversion > method.
Also not true. Apple has offered Postscript->PDF conversion since 10.0.
HOWEVER, it should also be noted that Adobe has been moving away from creation of PDFs via Postscript for many years. All of our Creative Suite apps have been doing "Direct to PDF" for almost 7 years now...

It is true that PDFs produced using Quartz are both larger and not accessible - that's just because Adobe knows how to do a better job ;). Mac OS X-based PDFs are, however, fully searchable.
Whether they are acceptable for "professional print production workflows" depends on many things, not the least of which is your definition of "professional print production". For example, EVERY Quartz PDF is "color managed" (eg. all colors are tagged with ICC profiles) - that's an EXCELLENT thing in modern print production...however, some "old timers" who are still working in the "CMYK is god" mode, will find it to be a problem. BUT you can produce pure CMYK out of Quartz, if you use their "Quartz Filters"...
