Open Distiller, and select Settings > Edit Adobe PDF Settings. Choose the Fonts category, and browse in the lists of fonts available in the different locations (under Embedding, Font Source). Fonts that have a Lock icon to the left of the font name do not allow embedding.
If you use Windows XP or later, you may also download a font properties extension from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/typography/TrueTypeProperty21.mspx This will add several tabs to the font properties dialog box in the control panel, including embedding permissions.

Re: Check on Font Permissions
Shlomo, thanks for these two tidbits. I was wondering about the Never Embed window. There is a list of about 40 fonts there. My initial impression is there should be no fonts that are told to never embed. I didn't put them there so it must be the default. Why are they listed?
Regards, Glenn

Thanks for the tips! I'm thinking that, if I were shopping among fonts, I would be most likely to choose those that ALLOW embedding! Judy

Acrobat comes with a set of fonts that are part of the program and are stored into a private folder for Acrobat's use. Since they are included, there is no need to embed them into the PDF since there is the assumption that they are accessible at viewing time. The Never Embed list are these fonts. You can always override them when creating a PDF so it is 100% Self-Contained but that just increases the size of the file.

Re: Check on Font Permissions
That's what I thought. The problem is I distribute the PDFS for use at conferences around the world so I don't know what fonts will be on user's systems or even what platform so I have to always embed a subset for all fonts. Thanks for verifying that. Glenn

Re: Check on Font Permissions
Au contraire ...
The "never embed" list of fonts are totally "system fonts" that "normally" would be available to all Windows users (such as members of the Arial, Times New Roman, Trebuchet, and Verdana TrueType font families). They absolutely do NOT include any fonts that are installed with Acrobat.
As for the fonts in Acrobat's private font directory, make no assumptions about their availability on other systems or in the future.
Best PDF workflow practices dictates that you should ALWAYS embed ALL fonts in all PDF files (using the subset option to prevent unreasonable and unnecessary file size bloat) to assure proper and accurate display and printing of your PDF content's text in all situations.
