Controlling CS5 Application Frame Size at Launch
I have never found a way to set the size of the Application Frame in InDesign to open to my chosen maximized size on my primary screen in a two-screen setup.
I've sized and positioned it, closed with no doc open, reopened, and it's still smaller than I want: no dice. I've set my workspace, but it apparently is not a part of that group of settings. There's no preference to be set for it.
The only scripting reference I can find for it is as a boolean "use application frame" property in general preferences, so I can't see how I might use a startup script.
Does someone have a solution?

I don't see one right off. An obvious solution would be not to use the application frame. Why do you want or need it?
In any event I wouldn't give up on a possible scripting solution without asking in ASID, etc. Plus I assume you've googled it or will.

Just a suggestion. Did you try saving your 2-monitor workspace under:
Window > Workspace > Save Workspace
and then recalling it? It works for me on CS3.
"Load 1st (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th) Workspace" can also be set as keyboard shortcut(s) and probably scripted.

It doesn't work for me on CS4. I saved a workspace with a smaller application frame and then another one with the frame zoomed to fill the screen. When I switch between the two there's no change, and the size of the frame seems totally independent from the chosen workspace.

MacFixIt posted a tip last week on how to set a window zooming shortcut (http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20044848-263.html?tag=nl.e795). It's very simple, you just enter a keyboard shortcut for zoom in the Keyboard system preferences. This is generally equivalent to clicking on the zoom button at the upper left of a window, and the zoom button of the application frame renders the desired result. The problem is that there doesn't appear to be a zoom menu command for the frame to apply a keyboard shortcut to, nor has anyone here found or presented a way to script this.
I'm still surprised the application frame size doesn't persist from one session to another.

Re: Controlling CS5 Application Frame Size at Launch
I don't think so. It would have to be layout window 1 with no doc open, I think, and that doesn't work. "Adobe InDesign CS4 got an error: Can=E2=80=99t set bounds of layout window 1 to {69, 33, 633, 829}."
But hey Harbs, if you can do it we probably all can. (Not that I want to myself, not using the frame.)

I just tried.
With a doc open this maximizes the app frame to my MacBook Pro 13" screen:
app.activeWindow.bounds [22,0,800,1280]

Interesting. My AS to resize the active window to my MBP 13" screen is:
tell application "Adobe InDesign CS4" set Disp to (do shell script "system_profiler SPDisplaysDataType | grep Resolution | awk '{print $2, $4}'") if Disp contains "1920 1200" then --office screen 1920 x 1200 set bounds of layout window 1 to {69, 33, 1200, 1838} else --MBP screen 1440 x 900 set bounds of layout window 1 to {69, 33, 800, 1202} end if end tell
This simply doesn't work at all if a document window isn't open.

Re: Controlling CS5 Application Frame Size at Launch
Harbs, interesting, but it only works when there's a doc open (AppleScript as well).
Butwith no document open, on a Mac running 7.0.3,
1) the equivalent AppleScript errored with the message: "No document windows are open."
tell application "Adobe InDesign CS5" tell active window set bounds to {22, 0, 800, 1280} end tell end tell
2) Your Javascript errors with the same message.

When there is an open doc and the app frame is used, the app frame *is the window*.

It isn't for me now, but it *was* until I dragged the window of the single open doc out of the application frame. After that it didn't matter if I closed that doc and created a new one in the frame, it still wasn't connected in the same way, i.e. that a window-resizing script would resize the frame along with the doc window.
Oh dear. I quit and relaunched InDesign, thinking this would restore the resizing of the frame along with the doc window, but the doc window was still independent and resized separately from the frame - which, also curiously in the light of Jim's question, was the same size as when I quit the app. I say curiously because if the size of the frame persists across a relaunch then Jim shouldn't have a problem.
Again, this is of no practical importance to me, but I'm still curious as to why the application frame was resized by a script (once) in my last ID session before I dragged the doc window out of it, but isn't now in the same situation.
Thanks,
Roy

Re: Controlling CS5 Application Frame Size at Launch
So basically, we seem to have all reached the conclusion that there is no way to overtly control the size of the application frame at launch time (i.e., with no document yet open).
Odd, cause the application frame in Photoshop holds its dimension across launches.
Roy, I had just recently been experimenting with using the application frame in InDesign. I'm not actually convinced there is any particular advantage, as you can still have a tabbed interface without it, except when only one window is open. -- ___________________________________________________

Re: Controlling CS5 Application Frame Size at Launch
I have been following this but I agree with Bread (don't matter to me)
Yet, ironically MY application frame retains it's size EVERY TIME... Quit, relaunch, reboot... App frame stays the same size and if I change the size, it stays the new size.
I just tried it about 7 times reboot, reboot, yep, just like Photoshop, it stays same.
Could it be bad prefs or a preference setting?
Mac OSX 10.6.4 ID 7.0.3
(Note we are hanging on to 10.6.4 because of Finder bug that duplicates ACLs in 10.6.5 and 10.6.6--are you all 10.6.6?)
Also, like the window resize scripts, one malady of CS5 is that it without app frame, it opens the first ID window underneath my toolbar, so I have to scoot it left --argh. Script helps.

I was going to say the same as Bret, that it persists for me - and it did. Only now it doesn't. Beats the hell outa me.

And then who needs tabs? I read somewhere (maybe here) that the application frame was only for people who were used to it on Windows. Maybe that's so, but it's not for me in any event and apparently not for you either.

Re: Controlling CS5 Application Frame Size at Launch
That's fine, but I think we've failed to solve what would seem to be a simple problem. Why is the size of the application frame persisting for some of us sometimes, but not other times? I just now thought that dragging the frame to full-screen size rather than zooming it would do the trick, but no, it still comes back to a smaller size. This current size and position isn't, however, the same as I had earlier in this discussion, so I know it's possible to change the default size. The question now is how. Once we know that, and if the behavior concerned is the same in Jim's ID version, then he'll just have to do that and his problem will be solved.

P.S. Jim Stallard had a scripting problem in ASID; it looks like I confused that with Rick's not being able to permanently resize his application frame. Anyway I kept trying to get my application frame size changed and kept failing, but I finally got it to persist by resizing it with no docs open and then closing the app. This is in CS4, I don't know if the behavior is the same in CS5 or not.

Yes, all my testing was done with no docs open... And my frame always remembered...
I would think that perhaps the window size of the document might impact it, as ID normally remembers the size of a document window if you are not using Application frame... And perhaps opening InDesign by double-clciking a document as opposed to clicking icon in Dock might matter, too.
Fun things for App Frame advocates to test!

Nope. No luck. I tried (CS5-7.0.3 / 10.5.8):
1) Resizng application frame to full width.
2) Opening a doc.
3) Turning application frame view off
4) Resizing doc to full screen size (not maximize)
5) Close doc and quit.
6) Relaunch and set to application frame view.
7) Same size as always :-(

Re: Controlling CS5 Application Frame Size at Launch
Not working for me. I had tried that a bunch before -- first thing I tried. Just tried again -- same deal. Not in CS5 OR in CS4. Both frames constently open to exactly the same smaller size and position (1440 x 1029, on a dual-monitor system with two monitors set to 1600 x 1200, primary monitor on the right). I wonder if there is something either with the two-monitor setup, or if both applications are erroneously reading some other value indicating the main monitor size.

I think it's encouraging that it's not working for you in either, as that suggests it's not a CS5 problem.

In both CS4 and CS5? That seems odd, but I suppose there would be a reason for it. This is about the same size and position I was getting yesterday, when it wouldn't change for me either despite multiple efforts.

If you really think that might be it, try with the second monitor disconnected. I have two monitors myself, though the second one is smaller. Hey, you could try temporarily changing the screen resolution(s), just to shake it up. You might try generating a fresh preferences file too, making a copy of your current one to go back to afterwards. It wouldn't change for me but finally did, so I still suppose it eventually will for you too.

Re: Controlling CS5 Application Frame Size at Launch
This is a potentially useful thread for me. One thing that drives me nuts about CS4 is that ID document windows don't remember their size or screen position. I work on a 27" iMac with the document window in the middle and various palettes open on the left and right, the edges of the document window going to the closest edge of the palettes but not under them. But the first document of every session opens full screen, so that, e.g., the scroll bar is hidden under the palettes on the right. Resizing is fiddly. So two questions:
(1) Does anyone know if this has been fixed in CS5?
(2) It's a long time since I've done any scripting, but it sounds like running Rick's
tell application "Adobe InDesign CS5" tell active window set bounds to {22, 0, 800, 1280} end tell end tell
would be a non-fiddly way of getting the doc window to resize properly, if I substitute for 22, 0, 800, 1280. But how do I find the correct numbers to put in their place?
Thanks, Graeme Forbes ############################################################# This message is sent to you because you are subscribed to the mailing list <indesign@lists.lassosoft.com>. Substitute the last two numbers with your screen resolution.

Re: Controlling CS5 Application Frame Size at Launch
Like Harbs said, but if you want a different setting you can size and position a window the way you want it, run
get bounds of active window
and copy the result into a set bounds script. I have a bunch of these with opt-cmd keycodes for my main screen and corresponding shift-opt-cmd keycodes for my second screen. On the main screen: opt-cmd-1/2/3/4/l/r/t/b > upper left/upper right/lower left/lower right/left/right/top/bottom. Plus ctrl-right arrow and ctrl-left arrow for fill screen main and second, respectively.
You might want to consider joining the AppleScripting InDesign Yahoo! Group if you have a continuing interesting in using AS with ID.
