I don't really understand how I'm supposed to use this.
You say:
"While Sidekick is enabled, Yojimbo will create a webpage for every included item, and add it to a portable, searchable index page. You can then place or transfer this collection of pages to any location you desire, for example: your phone, a computer or laptop which does not have Yojimbo installed, or an Internet or local web server."
Is there a way to actually put the hierarchy of HTML files on the iPhone or iPad that I'm unaware of?
I actually cannot get web sharing working on my Mac (I get a 403 on my machineÂ… I cannot resolve this and not for lack of trying and I'm not stupid, and no amount of mucking with permissions on Sites or apache files in /etc/apache2/users will address it), and I'm not convinced that even if I did get this working that I'd want to use B2MM to navigate from my iPhone from wherever I am. Are there better solutions for doing this that I'm missing? I want something portable that does not require an internet connection to get access to my YJ files.

My understanding is that SideKick isn't a solution specifically for iphones; it's a more general solution for using your Yojimbo library (or a part of it) away from your Mac. There are lots of ways that can be achieved and SideKick doesn't even attempt to support them all directly. Instead is serves as a generic solution.
If you have any sort of web serving available to you (eg. maybe a MobileMe account), then you can upload SideKick to that. On the iPhone you can use something like AirSharing to copy SideKick, although I've got problems using SideKick properly from within AirSharing. (I don't think that's a problem with SideKick though.)
Basically, anywhere you can store html files (static web site) will work fine for SideKick. And then just access SideKick through any web browser.
I'm quite impressed with how the searching works within SideKick without requiring a server process to handle the searching. I think the BBSW guys (Steve?) have done a great job of giving us a way to take our Yojimbo libraries with us.

Sidekick doesn't work for me on MobileMe. In the Sidekick preferences, once I choose my iDisk, the Keychain prompt me for authorizing access. I clicked Always Allow. I then create a Yojimbo folder in the Web > Sites directory. Nothing appears under Sidekick folder and when I click Start, I get a message that "An error occurred while starting up the website exporter: Could not create or locate export folder".
Is it possible to use MobileMe for this feature? Any advice would be welcomed.
Thanks

I haven't tried it with MobileMe, but what about saving the SideKick to a local folder and then copying to MobileMe? I think using iDisk as a regular disk will have strange behaviour since it's really webDAV and that introduces it's own limitations.
Make sure SideKick works for you locally first, then try it through MobileMe.

So once I create a Sidekick export folder, does Yojimbo continually update this external folder everytime I add or delete items in Yojimbo?

I tried exporting via Sidekick to a folder in iDisk/Documents: got an error. So I exported to a desktop folder then copied to iDisk/ Documents. The export was instant: 1700 items, 10 Mbytes. But the copy to iDisk... holy cow. It's only 15 % done and estimated 45 minutes to go. And that is just on the local disk. What's with that? Is that just a "slow iDisk copy" thing when there are lots of files?
Anxious to access Yojimbo on iPhone and iPad!

There is a bug in Yojimbo which prevents you from using your iDisk as a destination. We'll fix it in the next update.
The performance you are seeing is typical for iDisk. That's one of the many reasons I don't use it (and unfortunately, why this bug slipped through testing)

Re: Sidekick...
the short answer to this is, I think, that we all write to Dropbox and get them onto it, and we all use Dropbox
There are technical reasons which boil down to 'dropbox would be better'
it might be that the iDisk initial upload is like the first TM back-up -- but it might not, and I have more faith in dropbox's updating being quicker.

I suggest you try it and see. But yes, that's my experience; the SideKick folder stays current with changes to my Yojimbo library. I have to manually update SideKick on my web server though. And an FTP mirror upload makes that simple to do.

I believe that's a side-effect of iDisk being webDAV. I doubt there's much that can be done to improve the performance. But since I don't use iDisk I don't really know what the limitations are.

Is that bug the same reason I can't use a Transmit mounted SFTP account as a destination?

Hello all,
iDisk is only slow if you use the finder to do your upload (why Apple?). If you use a FTP client like Panic's Transmit or the free Cyber Duck you will see that WebDAV can be very fast.

I have no problem on the web or on my iPhone finding notes if I use Dropbox's search box. But otherwise Barebones says: "Putting the export on Dropbox, and browsing through their web interface does not work; all the individual items' pages will be unavailable." So it doesn't work very well unless I'm missing something.

Possibly related (but possibly not) I just did a non-private beta update for 1Password. The release notes in part said this:

Currently you can use Dropbox to hold your 1Password keychain and it will work fine on multiple computers. You can't use it for iPhone syncing, though.. For that you have to have your iPhone on the same wireless network as your open copy of 1Password. When you launch 1Password on the iPhone they then sync together.
My (very possibly incorrect) interpretation of this is that Dropbox has an under-development mechanism in their API to deal with a Yojimo-like situation (i.e., files accessed and updated from multiple computers, accessible from iPhone in a read-only manner). Short of an actual native iPhone app this seems to be very close to what I'd want in a portable Yojimbo.
Caution: I only *pretend* to be an actual programmer. (Standard disclaimer.)

Sidekick works with MobileMe if you have your iDisk set to 'Sync' in the MobileMe preferences. This setting means that your iDisk is local to your Mac and it's the MacOS which takes care of the synchronisation. I've been using iDisk sync for about 1.5 years now and it is working pretty well overall.
